A retrospective review of 20 patients with laryngeal chondrosarcoma treated at Helsinki University Hospital between 2000 and 2023 found that most (80%) underwent larynx-preserving surgery rather than total laryngectomy. Among cricoid cartilage tumors treated with function-preserving surgery, reoperation for tumor recurrence or growth and transformation to poorly differentiated or dedifferentiated histology were significantly associated with permanent tracheostomy; two patients developed distant metastases and two died of the disease. The authors state that low- or intermediate-grade tumors may develop higher-grade recurrence or metastasize, and that guidelines for tumor assessment and postoperative surveillance are needed.
