A population-based study tracking hospitalized first-ever strokes across six periods from 1993/4 to 2020 found stroke incidence in adults aged 20-54 nearly doubled, driven largely by ischemic stroke, while incidence declined in older adults over the same period. The study also reported rising rates of hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and substance use among young stroke patients over time, alongside a modest decline in 30-day case fatality, attributed mainly to improved outcomes in hemorrhagic stroke subtypes.
