New rubric assesses safety of AI-simplified radiology reports for patients
Researchers developed and tested a five-attribute rubric (clarity, content, certainty, tone, verbosity) to grade the quality and safety of AI-generated patient-friendly radiology reports, using ChatGPT-4.1 and Claude-4.0 outputs evaluated by lay participants, radiologists, and ChatGPT-5. The study reported moderate-to-substantial interreader agreement among human raters and moderate agreement between AI-assigned grades and reference-standard grades, with rule-based distribution decisions using AI grades matching reference-standard decisions 88.1% of the time. The authors state the rubric may serve as a standardized safeguard before releasing AI-generated patient communications, though they note it requires further training and validation.
